Southampton Samurai Judo Club started in 1975 under the guidance of Sensei Les Smith.  At the time we were members of the A.J.A. (Amateur Judo Association).  The only trouble being in the A.J.A. was that if there was a grading it would be in the West Country which would result in a very long day for us to attend. So after a number of  years in the A.J.A.  it was decided that we would join The British Judo Council, (B.J.C.).  The change over took place round about 1981 and we have remained with the BJC ever since.

Our first Dojo was in Bryon Road School, Thornhill, Southampton and after a number of years there we had the opportunity of having our own permanent dojo as Southampton City Council were going to close down a school and change it into a Leisure centre. So we applied to the City Council to see if it was possidale for us to have a permanent Dojo.

In 1984 we moved again, half a mile up the road to Eastpoint Centre which was still in the Thornhill area and made that our home for 24 years.

In 2008, the Eastpoint Centre was going to be pulled down and rebuilt but it would be smaller than before and of course that meant we would not have our permanent dojo, so we have to move again.  Woodlands Community College, Minstead Avenue, Harefield. Southampton SO18 5FW
come to our rescue and gave us a new home which is just outside the Thornhill area.  We have now been at Woodlands for over 5 years.
